Glen Murray was less than impressed with Guglielmo Vicario as Tottenham beat Aston Villa 4-1.
It has been a fantastic week for Tottenham.
After their 1-0 fourth-round Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday (30 October), they picked up a big three points by thrashing Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday (3 November), once again at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Goals from Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke sealed the win, with James Maddison scoring a stunning free-kick in stoppage time to add gloss on the result and send Postecoglou a message after the midfielder had been snubbed by the Australian.
However, the match didn’t start on the right foot for Postecoglou and his players.
Despite dominating possession in the first half an hour, it was Villa who took the lead in the 32nd minute with Morgan Rogers on hand to tap the ball into an empty net after Spurs had made a mess defensively from a corner.
And in what has become an all too familiar theme this season, Vicario once again appeared to be less than convincing with his work from the set-piece, with Murray criticising the 28-year-old.
The ex-Brighton striker said (via BBC Sport, 2:34 pm, 3 November), “Good from Aston Villa, they put it on top of the goalkeeper and they know that’s a weakness.
“Vicario is fighting with Morgan Rogers and I think it might come off a Spurs player, but he parries it to Rogers and he taps it in. That’s a big goal.”
Guglielmo Vicario lets Ange Postecoglou down despite Tottenham win v Aston Villa
Postecoglou must be scratching his head when it comes to his goalkeeper.
At times the Italy international is brilliant and produces some match-winning saves. However, he tends to struggle from set pieces and so often fails to command his box.
As per Sofascore, Vicario did a lot of good work, particularly with his feet, completing 100 per cent of his passes, while 100 per cent of his long balls were accurate.
He also made one save and two high claims, as well as one clearance. However, he prevented -0.02 goals overall, which will be of particular concern to Postecoglou.
Spurs got the three points in the end, so it didn’t mean much against Villa. However, Vicario’s weakness from set-pieces is still something which needs to be worked on.
In other Tottenham news, Manchester City are “optimistic” of signing one player from the club.
