Dominic Solanke starred for Tottenham as they came from behind to beat Aston Villa 4-1 at home in the Premier League on Sunday.
The first half did not according to plan for Spurs as Morgan Rogers’s tap-in put the visitors in front at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (3 November).
However, Ange Postecoglou’s side came out all guns blazing in the second period, firing four goals past Emiliano Martinez.
Brennan Johnson pulled level for Tottenham, while a four-minute brace from Solanke put them in the driving seat. Substitute James Maddison then put the cherry on top with a sublime free-kick goal.
Here, Tottenham Hotspur News has rated each player out of 10.
Guglielmo Viacrio – 4
Vicario had hardly anything to do until the 30th minute when he was tested by an Amadou Onana header at the near post. He could have done better as the visitors went on to score from the resulting corner, failing to deal with Rodrigo Bentancur’s initial unintended header on the Spurs’ goal effectively and allowing Rogers to tap in. The goalkeeper was a spectator in the second half as the hosts took the game to Villa.
Pedro Porro – 6
Porro was guilty of flicking the ball into the danger area for Rogers’ goal. The right-back also had his name taken for a tactical foul. However, as always, he was involved at both ends of the pitch for his team.
Radu Dragusin dull for Tottenham v Aston Villa
Cristian Romero (Off for Davies 61′) – 5
Romero was perhaps lucky to go unpunished after letting Ollie Watkins peel off him and have a clear sight of goal to make it 2-0 before half-time, with the striker dragging his shot wide. The Argentina international received a major blow as he was cautioned for a late foul on Rogers and picked up a foot injury in the process, resulting in him being substituted around the one-hour mark. He, though, was strong in his duels and made a few defensive contributions before limping off.
Radu Dragusin – 4
Dragusin was unacceptably dwarfed by Onana in the aerial duel that led to the corner from which Rogers opened the scoring. The Romanian was one of Spurs’ dullest players on the afternoon.
Destiny Udogie – 5 (Off for Gray 82′)
Udogie lived up to his reputation as an attacking full-back, creating two chances and registering as many touches in the opposition box (FotMob). He, though, lost half of his six duels and also committed three fouls in the process.
Dejan Kulusevski – 7
The Swede has been one of Tottenham’s standout performers this season and he showed why on Sunday. It was his incredible vision that set Solanke up for Spurs’ second. The execution of the pass could not have been any better.
Rodrigo Bentancur (Off for Bissouma 56′) – 5
Bentancur had little time to react as Porro flicked the ball into the six-yard box from a corner and ended up heading it at his own goalkeeper in the leadup to Rogers’ opener. He then got away without being booked for a lunging challenge on Onana in the 40th minute. With the Uruguayan risking a booking in a game that was intense in the middle of the mark, Postecoglou took him off early.
Pape Matar Sarr – 7
It was Sarr who won the ball in the lead-up to Solanke’s second. He completed 59 passes, including 12 into the final third, with 92 per cent accuracy. The midfielder also recovered the ball 13 times, while registering eight defensive actions.
Dominic Solanke the Man of the Match for Tottenham
Brennan Johnson – 8
There was a case to be made about Johnson being taken off at half-time, but he bounced back with Tottenham’s equaliser early on in the second period. The attacker did exceptionally well to make the most of Son’s cross and find the back of the net from close range. His minimal but effective involvement with Solanke’s first is also commendable.
Dominic Solanke – 9 (Man of the Match)
Solanke hardly saw the ball in the first half and did nothing of note when he did have it. He then came close to putting his side up front just seconds after Johnson’s equaliser, but was denied by a good save from Emiliano Martinez. The Englishman, though, took the Villa goalkeeper completely out of the equation with a phenomenal finish to put Spurs in front. The best strikers often chip with a crucial goal even when they look to be having a dull day at the office and Solanke certainly did that. His patience was rewarded with another goal.
Son Heung-min (Off for Richarlison 56′) – 6
After a rather quiet first half, Son stepped up with a brilliant assist to help Spurs pull level. His peach of a cross put the ball on a plate for Johnson to finish. It surprisingly turned out to be the Korean’s last contribution in the game as he was replaced by Richarlison, with Postecoglou seemingly keen to protect him.
Substitutions
Richarlison (On for Son 56′) (Off for Maddison 82′) – 6
Richarlison was unfortunate to be forced off with an injury just 26 minutes after coming on. However, the Brazilian did manage to make a major contribution before going off, providing the assist for Solanke’s second.
Yves Bissouma (On for Bentancur 56′) – 5
Ben Davies (On for Romero 61′) – 5
James Maddison (On for Richarlison 82′) – 7
Maddison’s free-kick goal in added time was the icing on the cake for Tottenham. The midfielder has come in for some criticism in recent weeks, but would have been delighted to get his name on the scoresheet.
Archie Gray (On for Udogie 82′) – 5
