Giovani Lo Celso’s impressive performance in the Copa America final might earn him another shot under Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.
The midfielder came on as a substitute in the first half of extra time, and in his 23 minutes, he had a perfect 100 per cent passing accuracy, completing all seven of his passes.
He also had 11 touches and made one key pass, which created a big scoring chance that led to Lautaro Martínez netting the winning goal.
Argentina needed players to step up after Lionel Messi was forced off after 66 minutes due to injury, and Lo Celso delivered.
He won one out of three ground duels and set up the goal that clinched Argentina’s 16th Copa America title, with Tottenham quickly noticing his performance and congratulating him on social media.
Giovani Lo Celso might get another chance at Tottenham
Lo Celso joined Spurs in August 2019 from Real Betis, initially on loan before completing a permanent transfer in January 2020.
He has made 108 appearances for Spurs in all competitions, scoring eight times. Last season, he played 24 matches across all competitions, scoring two goals in the Premier League.
He even scored in back-to-back matches against Aston Villa and Manchester City in December.
Despite being mostly used as a substitute during the Copa America, Lo Celso made a big impact in the final. His calm under pressure and sharp playmaking skills were on full display.
Postecoglou has been considering changes at Tottenham this summer with Lo Celso linked with a move to Aston Villa, possibly in a swap deal for Jacob Ramsey [Sky Sports, July 8].
However, the midfielder’s impressive performance in the Copa America might change that.
Last season, Lo Celso didn’t get much game time. But his excellent performance in the final shows his talent. If given another chance at Tottenham, he could bring the same skill and impact he showed on Sunday, becoming a key player for Spurs next season.
