Pape Matar Sarr’s goal and overall performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s 5-0 victory at Southampton was more than worthy of Troy Deeney’s praise.
Naming Sarr in his BBC Team of the Week (16 December), Deeney recognised that while Southampton put up very little fight, the 22-year-old’s “class” and “composure” stood out on the south coast.
Sarr arrived on the edge of the Saints box to slalom his way through and make it 4-0 to Spurs after just 25 minutes, finishing clinically from Son Heung-min’s square pass amid a dominant display.
Deeney said: “He’s been good for a couple of weeks and this was the kind of game where he gets a goal and he shows his level of class and composure.
“This time I’m going to stick him in – even if it was only against Southampton.”
Pape Matar Sarr unplayable for Tottenham v Southampton
Sarr barely put a foot wrong at St. Mary’s on Sunday, with his goal and entire 90 minute display against Southampton making it no surprise he was named as one of three Lilywhites in Deeney’s dream team.
Scoring with one of his two shots and creating two chances, the Senegalese international produced 0.27xG, 0.79 xGOT (expected goals on target) and completed 96 per cent of his 74 passes [SofaScore].
While much of the one-sided match resembled a training session for Spurs as all five goals came before half-time, Sarr didn’t let his levels drop one bit and recorded eight defensive actions at the other end.
In those eight actions, Sarr put in six ball recoveries, four interceptions and three tackles, with a 100 per cent success rate for the latter as well as his sole attempted cross, two shots and two dribbles apiece [FotMob].
Though only one of his three long ball attempts came off, Sarr completed seven passes in the final third, and won five of his seven ground duels as Spurs rode roughshod through the Southampton midfield.
Sarr’s game-time hasn’t always been consistent for the Lilywhites so far this term, but after his best display of the season in a sixth straight league start, the midfielder’s place is now surely nailed down.
