Tottenham Hotspur defender Radu Dragusin was Romania’s best player by some distance as they exited Euro 2024 with a 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands.

Dragusin’s Romania side were eventually outmatched in Munich following Cody Gakpo’s early goal and Donyell Malen’s late double as they were well beaten to bring their tournament to an end at the round-of-16 stage.

However, the Dutch could have been out of sight much earlier on had it not been for some heroic defending from Dragusin, who stood out among his team-mates in a strong individual showing.

The 22-year-old has only featured nine times for Spurs since signing from Genoa in January, and performances such as the one on 2 July could help him to break into Ange Postecoglou’s XI more often.

Playing the full 90 minutes against the Netherlands, Dragusin’s performance was far removed from that of his team-mates, recording a 7.2 SofaScore rating as Romania averaged just 6.49 across the board.

Taking on a Dutch side that included former and current Tottenham players in Steven Bergwijn and Micky van de Ven respectively, Dragusin was kept busy at the back for much of the encounter.

‘Busy’ is putting it mildly, with the 22-year-old making a whopping 11 clearances alone, as well as five interceptions, blocking one shot and making a successful tackle respectively.

Radu Dragusin will hope for more opportunities at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.

Dragusin won four of his five overall duels, including two from two in the air, drawing a foul from one of these contests with Romania weathering wave after wave of Oranje attack.

Having 47 touches in total, Dragusin also completed 79 per cent of his 24 attempted passes, finding his man with one of two attempted long balls as his side had their backs to the wall for much of the game.

His Tottenham team-mate Van de Ven, who really did shine for the Lilywhites last season, replaced Nathan Ake for the Dutch in the 69th minute, recording a 6.7 SofaScore rating of his own at left-back.

Spurs look well-stocked for defenders going into the new season, and Romania’s early exit means Dragusin will soon be back with Postecoglou’s squad looking to really establish himself in North London.

This showing might just have proven a point to Postecoglou despite his nation’s ultimately comfortable defeat.

In other Tottenham news, the club will consider a summer transfer for one international player as an asking price is shared.
