Destiny Udogie has faced some deserved criticism for his defensive incompetence during his recent displays for Tottenham.

Having been spotlighted for his role in Brighton’s 3-2 comeback at the Amex Stadium, he was then partially blamed for West Ham’s only goal, though that was covered over by the 4-1 win.

Red flags have since been raised over the Italian’s ability to defend in front of Guglielmo Vicario, but fans should have those concerns alleviated despite the 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday 27 October.

Micky van de Ven, on the other hand, cannot escape the criticism after his lack of awareness in the penalty area was eventually punished by Jean-Philippe Mateta at Selhurst Park.

Udogie did his absolute best to use his attacking prowess to get Ange Postecoglou’s side back into the all-London tie, but to no avail as Spurs dropped all three points on the road.

By no means was it a flawless performance from the 21-year-old, but fans will have little to moan about when it comes to the defensive side of his game.

Relying on his pace, agility and ability to get out of tight situations, Udogie was fouled on five occasions, made nine recoveries, and completed 50 per cent of his dribbles (2/4) at Selhurst Park [FotMob].

He also maintained an 85 per cent passing accuracy, with six of those going into the final third, creating one big chance, and only had fewer touches than Cristian Romero, van de Ven and Pedro Porro.

Up against the likes of Eberechi Eze, Ismaila Sarr, Daniel Munoz and Mateta, Udogie was an absolute nuisance, winning 67 per cent of his ground duels.

Only Munoz, Dominic Solanke and Eze entered into more duels during the clash, and while he did lose eight duels in total, his commitment and dedication to Spurs cannot be questioned.
