Dejan Kulusevski was one of Sweden’s best players as the Tottenham star and his team-mates dispatched Estonia with three first-half goals.

Starting behind strikers Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres for the UEFA Nations League match in Solna on 8 September, Kulusevski provided link-up play between the trio throughout a one-sided encounter.

Gyokeres fired home the first goal of a 14-minute brace on the half-hour mark and netted again just before half-time, either side of Isak doubling Sweden’s lead in the 40th minute.

Kulusevski captained the Swedish side from a central role and often drifted to link up with team-mates in wide spaces, while another Spurs midfielder in Lucas Bergvall came off the bench in the 66th minute.

Dejan Kulusevski performance will please Ange Postecoglou

While he was unable to get on the scoresheet or get an assist in Sweden’s dominant 3-0 win, stand-in captain Kulusevski was still one of the best players on-field, and outlined his credentials for Spurs too.

The 24-year-old was heavily involved in Sweden’s attacking barrage, with two of his three shots being on target and another three attempts being blocked by the Estonian defence [SofaScore].

Six of the playmaker’s eight attempted dribbles were successful, but Kulusevski did miss one big chance to extend Sweden’s lead further in the second half with the match all-but won.

Tottenham, Dejan Kulusevski
Dejan Kulusevski has played regularly for Tottenham in the Premier League so far this season

His 101 touches were the second most of any Sweden player (after Gabriel Gudmundsson), and 86 per cent of his 69 passes found their targets, with five of these being key passes leading to chances.

Playing through the middle, Kulusevski was in the thick of things for the entire 90 minutes, winning six of his 13 ground duels, another battle in the air, and committing two fouls while avoiding a yellow card.

Kulusevski has shown that he can excel in a central, attacking midfield role for his country, and now could be the time for Ange Postecoglou to commit to playing the Swede in a similar position for his Spurs side.
