Bryan Gil has been demonstarting to Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou what happens when he is offered consistent first-team minutes.
Gil has never been a first-team regular in North London.
He struggled for game time under Antonio Conte and the arrival of Postecoglou didn’t help much either.
The forward has spent much of his Spurs career out on loan with various clubs in Spain. Therefore, it wouldn’t have come as much of a surprise to supporters when he joined Girona on a season-long loan deal.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (29 July), Gil signed a contract extension with Tottenham which included a £12.8million release clause.
Following that news, the club announced the 23-year-old’s temporary switch to Girona via their official website (29 July). However, the announcement failed to make any mention of Gil’s reported contract extension.
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Spaniard leave the club permanently next summer, especially after such a low release clause was included in his contract. However, based on his performances thus far for Girona, Postecoglou and Tottenham might end up looking pretty silly for not giving the player more of a chance.
Since his move back to La Liga, Gil has started all four of Girona’s league matches, and he has looked bright in those appearances.
Bryan Gil impressing on loan from Tottenham with Girona
During a 1-1 draw with Real Betis (15 August), the winger completed three successful dribbles and 90 per cent of his passes, with two of those key (Sofascore). He also made an impression defensively, winning nine ground duels and making four tackles.
In a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid (25 August), Gil was arguably Girona’s best player on the pitch. He was successful with 80 per cent of his dribbles, completing four out of five, and completed 90 per cent of his passes, with one of those key.
But it was in the 4-0 win against Osasuna (29 August) where he made his first real contribution for Girona, getting himself on the scoresheet, while completing 92 per cent of his passes, with one of those key, and one successful dribble.
Gil’s most recent outing saw him help his side to a 2-0 win away at Sevilla (1 September), where the forward made three successful dribbles, played one key pass, won eight ground duels and made five tackles.
While his bright form might be a result of Gil being more comfortable in Spain than the Premier League, he is certainly making Postecoglou look silly for not offering him more of an opportunity.
If he continues in this form, it won’t be difficult for him to secure a move away from Tottenham, a sale which the North London outfit could ultimately live to regret.
In other Tottenham news, one player is still keen on leaving the club this month as a transfer update emerges.
