View: Ange in serious trouble as 100% Tottenham star nowhere to be seen v Newcastle

Ange Postecoglou has been unable to call on Micky van de Ven in his confirmed Tottenham team to take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Sunday (1 September).

Spurs picked up their first three points of the season with a 4-0 win over Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (24 August).

Postecoglou’s side will be keen to build some momentum following the convincing victory. However, they face tough back-to-back games, with Arsenal visiting on Sunday 15 September following their trip to Newcastle.

St James’ Park has not been a happy hunting ground for Spurs in recent years, with the North London side losing 6-1 and 4-0 on their previous two visits to the stadium.

Therefore, the absence of van de Ven will come as a big blow to Tottenham in what promises to be an already difficult encounter.

Spurs confirmed their starting lineup via the club’s official X account (1 September), and supporters will have been gutted to see van de Ven miss out.

There is no getting away from it, this is a huge blow for Postecoglou and Tottenham.

Van de Ven is one of the first names on the team sheet and a key player in North London. As a result, supporters will be apprehensive about facing Newcastle without the Dutchman.

As reported by reliable Spurs insider Paul O Keefe via X (1 September), it appears as though van de Ven has developed an issue with his quadricep muscle.

And supporters will hope the injury is nothing serious after the start to the season the 23-year-old has made.

The centre-back excelled on the ball against Everton, completing 93 per cent of his passes, with one of those key (Sofascore). In addition, he set up Son Heung-min for his second of the afternoon after running the length of the pitch.

During the 1-1 draw with Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Monday 19 August, van de Ven won 100 per cent of his ground and aerial duels while making three clearances.

He also completed 94 per cent of his passes and played four accurate long balls.

His importance can’t be understated, and supporters will hope he can return for the North London derby.
