Ange Postecoglou will be concerned by Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr’s form over the international break.
Sarr emerged as a key player in North London last season under Postecoglou.
The 21-year-old made 34 Premier League appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
Sarr would have been hoping to kick on this season. However, the midfielder has not made the most promising of starts to the brand-new campaign.
While he has featured in all three of Spurs’ Premier League matches, he was benched during the 4-0 win over Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (24 August) and replaced at half-time in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park (1 September).
As a result of his slow start to the season, Postecoglou would have been hoping for Sarr to have a big couple of games with Senegal over the international break.
However, that has not been the case, and Postecoglou will therefore be concerned about his midfielder.
Tottenham midfielder Pape Matar Sarr struggles for Senegal
Sarr started Senegal’s 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso on Friday (6 September) but failed to make much of an impact in the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
While he completed 90 per cent of his passes, he was unsuccessful with his one dribble attempt and won just one of his seven ground duels (Sofascore).
In addition, he lost the one aerial duel he contested and gave possession away seven times before being hooked in the 68th minute.
Following his underwhelming display, Sarr was benched for Senegal’s second African Cup of Nations qualifying match, a 1-0 victory over Burundi on Monday (9 September).
The Spurs man was introduced during the closing stages of stoppage time and managed to help his team over the line by winning 100 per cent of his ground duels and making two tackles.
However, Postecoglou will be concerned by Sarr’s overall performance levels while he was away with his country.
One start, in which he played poorly, from two matches isn’t exactly the kind of preparation Sarr would have wanted ahead of the visit of Arsenal on Sunday (15 September), and Postecoglou will no doubt be concerned.
With competition for places in Spurs’ midfield increasing, if the Senegal international doesn’t find some form soon, he could quickly find himself out of the first-team pictures at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
