Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be concerned by the performance Radu Dragusin put in against Kosovo for Romania (6 September).
Dragusin is one of the stand-out players for Romania in terms of the club that he plays for.
However, his outing against Kosovo left a lot to be desired despite the 3-0 win. While Postecoglou uses the Romanian as a back-up to the likes of Christian Romero and Micky van de Ven, that doesn’t mean his performances should slip.
His performances during Euro 2024 were stellar which piqued the interest of many Spurs fans with the defender even being given a chance to prove his worth during Spurs’ most recent Premier League game against Newcastle United due to Van de Ven’s injury-enforced absence.
However, as Postecoglou is a manager who likes his players to be able to play out of the back, Dragusin’s latest performance for Romania against Kosovo could well give the Australian a bit of a selection headache.
Tottenham will be concerned after Radu Dragusin’s display for Romania
As aforementioned, one of Postecoglou’s priorities when it comes to centre-backs is the fact that they can play out from the back and be comfortable in possession.
There’s no denying that Spurs have three top-class centre-backs within their ranks but each player needs to be on top form if and when needed.
Although international breaks can sometimes hinder more than help, when a player puts in a good performance, it makes their return to the team far easier.
Despite Romania as a team having a good game by winning 3-0, Dragusin was fairly poor, especially in terms of passing as the defender only managed to earn a 68% pass accuracy during the tie (Sofascore).
In addition to this, zero of the passes attempted ended up being key passes and of the seven long balls that the defender attempted, only one was accurate.
Defensively Dragusin didn’t have the best of games either, he only managed to have a total of 52 touches despite being used for the full 90 minutes.
He also lost possession of the ball 13 times and failed to make a single tackle. He also only managed one interception, though the defensive stats may admittedly say more about the quality of the opposition and the lack of defensive work required.
While one game can’t be all Dragusin’s form is based on, it’ll no doubt knock Postecoglou’s confidence in whether or not the 22-year-old is a reliable deputy.
In other Tottenham news, Dan Bardell has named one Spurs ace as Ange Postecoglou’s “fall guy”.
