Destiny Udogie has been far from his best for Tottenham since the 2024/25 Premier League campaign began.

Despite being well known for his attacking attributes from left-back, flying up and down the flank and adding a new dynamic to Spurs’ forward line, he has been unable to reach the same form as last season.

The 21-year-old has notched just one goal and one assist in his last 17 appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s side but was still called up by Luciano Spalletti for the Italy national team.

That decision looks to have benefitted his nation, having come on as a substitute on the hour mark and providing an assist just 13 minutes later in a 3-1 win for the Italians over France.

Postecoglou will be hoping to see some of that fire and energy return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with him as Spurs gear up to face Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday 15 September.

Destiny Udogie must improve at Tottenham after Italy assist v France

In just 28 minutes of football, Udogie managed to complete 85 per cent of his passes (11/13), creating one big chance that was scored by Giacomo Raspadori, and entering into nine aerial battles [FotMob].

Despite only winning 44 per cent of those aerials, he showed a lot more gut and determination than many may feel he has done for Spurs so far this season, with the defence struggling against Leicester City and Newcastle United.

Ranking in the top 79 percentile for non-penalty goals, 92 percentile for progressive passes and 93 percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area [FBref], his stats suggest he should be racking up more goal contributions.

The North London derby will also require him to be defensively sound, and given he ranks in the top 79 percentile for tackles and the top 82 percentile for interceptions, this shouldn’t be a problem for him.

However, his last appearance against the Gunners may worry some. He only won 50 per cent of his tackles and 47 per cent of his ground duels while picking up a yellow card with four fouls [FotMob].

Hopefully, the young Italian will be inspired by his cameo against France and bring that back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with him.
