Ange Postecoglou will struggle to defend any of his Tottenham players following the 3-2 defeat to Brighton but Rodrigo Bentancur can certainly be singled out.

Spurs looked set for their sixth consecutive victory in all competitions at the Amex Stadium on Sunday (6 October), flowing with confidence off the back of the 2-1 Europa League win over Ferencvaros.

However, having gone 2-0 up through Brennan Johnson and James Maddison, Postecoglou’s side went into cruise control until Yankuba Minteh hit the back of the net three minutes into the second half.

Georginio Rutter then took advantage to drag the Seagulls level before Danny Welbeck fired the home side into the lead, which is where Bentancur really disappointed.

The Uruguayan just had to knock the ball out of play, but he did not react quickly enough, eventually leading to Spurs going one goal behind, with Rutter just wanting the ball more.

Speaking live via Sky Sports [6 October, 5:59], Alan Smith said: “How Rutter wiggled away from three players on the right-hand side of the box is beyond me. He had no right to keep going.

“Bentancur does nowhere near enough. Danny Welbeck cannot believe the space. He cannot believe he got a free header. Unbelievable.”

It marks the 10th time Spurs have lost a Premier League game in which they have led by two-or-more goals – the first club to hit double figures for that unwanted statistic [Opta].

Rodrigo Bentancur flops in Tottenham loss v Brighton

That moment in question saw Bentancur record just a 50 per cent win rate for tackles against the Seagulls, also winning just 60 per cent of his ground duels and 33 per cent of his aerial duels [FotMob].

Given his bright display against Manchester United on 29 September, boasting 96 per cent passing accuracy, creating two chances and making eight recoveries [FotMob], it is a huge disappointment.

Of course, the whole squad needs to look at themselves in the mirror after allowing a two-goal lead to vanish, but the individual moment of slowness and lack of desire saw Spurs suffer at a crucial moment.

The 27-year-old ranks in the bottom 52 percentile for tackling, as per FBref, and that was clear as Rutter was allowed to stroll into the penalty area and dink a cross into the middle for Welbeck to score.

Bentancur is also in the bottom 55 percentile in terms of blocks per 90 (1.22), meaning his defensive aspects are often lacking.

He is certainly not alone when it comes to criticism but these crucial moments saw Spurs fall from winning all three points to losing all of them at the Amex Stadium.

In other Tottenham news, one 100% star finally looked back to his best v Brighton, Dimitar Berbatov loved a “perfect” moment.
