Everton fans have every right to feel hard done by after the Premier League released unseen footage from the 0-0 draw with Newcastle United.
The Toffees played out a stalemate with the Magpies at Goodison Park on Saturday (5 October) in a game with multiple talking points.
Newcastle had a penalty awarded, which Anthony Gordon missed – much to the delight of everyone inside Goodison – while Everton had a strong appeal waved away in the second half.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brought down in the box by Dan Burn, but VAR decided it was not worthy of a spot-kick after reviewing the incident.
If that was not frustrating enough for Everton supporters, they will be further angered following the release of the VAR audio from Stockley Park.
Howard Webb speaks out on Everton v Newcastle United controversy
Speaking via Match Officials Mic’d Up on Tuesday (8 October), PGMOL chief Webb defended the decision not to award a penalty.
However, the VAR audio footage made no mention of Dan Burn failing to win the ball when trying to win it from Calvert-Lewin.
As Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Croll posted via his personal X account [8 October]: “Absolutely no mention from VAR of Dan Burn failing to win the ball in the Premier League’s audio for the Calvert-Lewin penalty incident. Astonishing.”
This is another example of why VAR constantly falls short. It is supposed to be there to ensure clear and obvious decisions are not missed, and that was not the case in this instance.
Everton were unfortunate not to have a penalty which, if awarded and scored, would have likely meant three valuable points to take into the international break.
Instead, Sean Dyche’s men settled for what was still a positive point that helps change the narrative over these next two weeks.
When club action resumes with a trip to Ipswich Town on 19 October, though, do not expect any sort of improvement in the level of officiating.
In other Everton news, stunning footage has emerged of the new stadium.
