John Heitinga has risked facing the wrath of the Everton supporters after footage emerged of the Liverpool coach mocking the club.

Heitinga joined the backroom staff at Liverpool this summer to become assistant coach to Arne Slot, and while that decision alone is enough to fracture his relationship with the Blues, his latest comments will cause fury among the Everton faithful.

The former Blues player was heard in Liverpool training, as shared on X [12 September], comparing their Merseyside rivals to the training mannequins.

As Darwin Nunez fired the ball into the back of the net, the Dutchman said: “It’s like Everton’s defence.”

Everton are becoming a laughing stock

If the Everton players needed further motivation to secure an unlikely away win against Aston Villa on Saturday [14 September], Sean Dyche should force his squad to watch the footage.

The Blues have been a far cry this season from the side that conceded 51 goals throughout the 2023/24 campaign – only Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal conceded fewer.

This time out, Everton lead the Premier League charts for goals conceded, with 10 against after three consecutive losses, and sit at the foot of the table following the return from the international break.

Dyche has faced his fair share of challenges defensively this season. Jarrad Branthwaite has yet to feature and is confirmed to miss the match against Aston Villa. Seamus Coleman is touch and go for the weekend, meanwhile, and his absence for the opening two fixtures saw 39-year-old Ashley Young and 19-year-old Roman Dixon deployed in his absence.

Both players were key to the Toffees’ solid defensive record last term, and their return should plug the holes in a defence that has too easily shipped goals.

There are tough decisions that must be made ahead of the must-win clash against Aston Villa. Young and Dixon both struggled to meet the required standard in the matches against Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham but one of them is likely to start against Villa.

With Jake O’Brien waiting for his first Premier League start, Dyche must consider selecting his summer signing on the weekend. James Tarkowski and Michael Keane have been poor, but unfortunately Dyche is not blessed with other options at Goodison Park.

In other Everton news, Jamie Carragher shares a new Sean Dyche sack claim at the Toffees.
