Everton fans will be relieved to hear Craig Pawson has been demoted to fourth official duties in the Premier League this coming weekend.

Pawson was the match referee for the 0-0 draw against Newcastle United at Goodison Park before the international break. He ultimately cost the Blues three points with his decision not to award a penalty when Dan Burn brought down Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Burn admitted after the match that he felt the VAR officials would not have overturned the decision had Pawson awarded a spot-kick.

The Premier League has released the match official list [15 October] for his weekend’s round of fixtures, with Pawson seemingly paying the price for his error as he will be the fourth official for Tottenham against West Ham United on Saturday [19 October], rather than being in the middle for any of the 10 games.

Everton lost three points because of Craig Pawson error

While PGMOL chief Howard Webb defended the decision not to award a penalty, footage released in the aftermath showed Pawson and the VAR officials had committed a monumental error.

In periods of difficulty, all sides need an extra slice of luck to get over the line in the Premier League and for one of those moments taken away by another refereeing error is inexcusable.

Jordan Pickford had already swung the momentum in the Blues’ favour after his “crucial” penalty save against former teammate Anthony Gordon, and they gave a good account of themselves at Goodison Park despite being heavy underdogs heading into the match.

The decision to demote Pawson for the weekend, if that is indeed the case, could be a calculated move to remove him from the limelight. Regardless, Everton supporters will be delighted to see some form of justice.

A victory would have marked a remarkable turnaround in form for Sean Dyche, with his record in the last three Premier League matches standing at two wins and one draw rather than two draws and one win.

Dyche is under intense scrutiny on Merseyside and will need a less controversial outing against Ipswich Town on Saturday [19 October] ahead of what will prove to be a “massive” run of fixtures that could determine his future at Goodison Park.
