There was plenty of optimism among the Everton faithful when Jesper Lindstrom arrived on loan from Napoli this summer.
The Denmark international had endured an unhappy 12 months in Naples after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt in August 2023.
But a fresh start on Merseyside felt like the best solution for all parties.
For Lindstrom, it represented the opportunity to display his talents in the Premier League. For the Toffees it was an extra attacking body in a position where Sean Dyche’s squad was severely lacking in options.
Moreover, a reported £20million purchase option included in the deal (Liverpool Echo, 1 December) felt like a sensible solution for all involved, especially given the Tofffees’ well-documented financial struggles.
It has not exactly gone to plan for the 24-year-old, who has started just six Premier League games, made only a further four appearances from the bench, failed to score and yet to register an assist.
Now, following what Alan Myers posted on X on Sunday (8 December), it looks as though Everton have surely made their made up on his purchase option.
Asked if Everton will do any transfer business in the upcoming January window, the Sky Sports journalist replied: “Depends on a couple of things, to be honest, but I would think defence and winger would be likely,”
Everton surely make their mind up on Jesper Lindstrom transfer
Now, of course, the Toffees also brought Jack Harrison back for a second loan spell from Leeds United in the summer but his future remains just as up in the air.
The fact that Sean Dyche is reportedly targeting another wide option doesn’t exactly scream good news for either player and it is hard to imagine the Toffees forking out such a substantial sum on a player who has not exactly set the world alight, even if the Friedkin Group takeover goes through without a hitch.
There is time for things to change of course but not for now it is hard to look past another scenario that Everton have already made their minds up not to make his deal permanent.
