Everton are set to lose out on Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who is set to move to Ipswich Town on loan.
The Telegraph reported on 15 August that Phillips has agreed to join newly-promoted Ipswich for the season in the latest blow for the Blues who had hoped to seal a similar deal with Man City.
Sean Dyche is eager to recruit a new central midfielder this summer with only James Garner and Idrissa Gueye as the club’s only senior options in the middle of the park, Abdoulaye Doucoure can deputise if necessary but is preferred further forward.
Phillips is travelling to Suffolk to undergo his medical at Portman Road [The Athletic, 15 August] leaving the Blues with little over a fortnight to identify an alternative target for the midfield.
Everton miss out on Kalvin Phillips
The pursuit of Phillips split opinion among the Everton fan base, Phillips was exceptional during his time at Leeds United but has struggled with both fitness and playing time at Manchester City.
West Ham United offered a route out of the Etihad last season but the move proved to be underwhelming as he failed to impress in East London during his 10 outings.
Dyche has maneuvered well in the transfer window this summer to stay within the bounds of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules and, taking on a player of Phillips’ wages would have been a foolish move from the club.
Premier League experience is what the manager wants for any new signings and, while the 28-year-old has an abundance, he has only played 31 times for Man City since his move to the Premier League champions in 2022.
A move to Ipswich, a side expected to make an immediate return to the Championship, is a shrewd move with no expectations and could be the perfect environment for the midfielder to thrive and earn a permanent exit from the Etihad.
Everton have made the right move to move on from Phillips, he is entering his prime years and this loan you would imagine, will be his last chance to impress in the Premier League, Dyche can move on to other targets who are more guaranteed to make an immediate impact at Goodison Park.
