Ashley Young may be in his final season at Everton despite experiencing a rejuvenation under Sean Dyche in recent weeks.
The 39-year-old has started eight of the Toffees’ Premier League fixtures so far this term, missing one through suspension following his red card against Brighton in the opening game of the season.
Many fans expected the former Aston Villa man to play a limited role throughout the campaign, but with injuries to Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman, Dyche has had his hands tied.
With three assists to his name and only one yellow card, though, the veteran defender looks to be experiencing an unexpected renaissance this season, impressing on the right flank.
However, all good things must come to an end and that could certainly be the situation with Young, especially given the recent transfer news emerging from the American Express Stadium.
Everton to sign Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey?
According to AfricaFoot [6 November], the Toffees are interested in signing 24-year-old Tariq Lamptey, who has become frustrated with his lack of game time for Brighton.
It is understood that a decision could be made on his future in the next few days by new manager Fabian Hurzeler, with the winter transfer window on the horizon.
Considering that the Ghanian’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, the Toffees may have the opportunity to strike a cheap deal in January or even sign him on a free transfer in the summer.
Either way, this would suggest that Dyche’s team are looking to find a long-term replacement for Young, and Lamptey, who was once dubbed “impressive” and “fantastic” by Graham Potter [talkSPORT], could be his successor.
The full-back has had horrible luck when it comes to injuries, which might explain his single Premier League appearance this season, but a talented player is waiting to be unlocked if he can stay fit.
It seems strange to now be talking about replacing Young at right-back, but with the veteran only getting older, it seems like the right time to think about who his successor might be.
