Everton and striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin have had a more than mixed start to the Premier League season.
The England international has almost been an ever-present in Sean Dyche’s ranks this term and while he has impressed in flashes, he has only managed to find the net twice in 10 league games.
His performances at the top end of the pitch have left fans and pundits alike frustrated and the supporters’ feelings have only been exacerbated by the ongoing contract standoff at Goodison Park.
While the door isn’t closed for the 27-year-old to extend his contract beyond the end of the season [Liverpool Echo, 28 September], so far, Calvert-Lewin has yet to agree terms on a new deal with the Toffees.
That has led to suggestions that the Blues could be willing and ready to accept a cut-price offer for the forward in January if it meant they avoided losing him as a free agent at the end of the campaign [Joe Thomas, 16 October].
One team that may now be interested in making that sort of reduced offer could be Manchester United.
Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit Everton amid Manchester United transfer update?
The Red Devils were reportedly interested in the England international during the summer transfer window as Erik ten Hag looked to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season [Dharmesh Sheth, 12 August].
While no deal was reached and the Dutchman has now left Old Trafford, a move for Calvert-Lewin may be on the cards of Ruben Amorim’s United after Florian Plettenberg dropped a new transfer update.
Writing on X on Wednesday (6 November) the Sky Sports journalist said: “Manchester United plan to make moves in the winter transfer market.
“Understand that the Red Devils are looking for an affordable striker. MUFC are also in search of a number eight, a central midfielder. Leon Goretzka’s situation is still being closely monitored.”
On the face of it, Calvert-Lewin fits the brief of an “affordable striker”. While Everton will still command a fee for his services, they’re not in a position to hold out for a life-changing amount of money.
It will be interesting to see whether or not United make a new approach for the striker and if Everton are at all interested in sanctioning his exit. Either way, this move simply cannot be ruled out at this moment in time.
