James Tavernier’s struggles for Rangers should give Dujon Sterling the chance to secure a starting role going forward.
The club captain has missed just one of the Gers 15 Scottish Premiership matches so far this campaign, starting 13 and coming off of the bench in the other.
The veteran is well past his best and has not been the reliable presence that he is known for from a defensive perspective but he has still contributed going forward with two goals and four assists in the league.
Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s Football Show [11 December], Scott Allen believes that his defending is a concern, saying: “He has been at fault for a lot of goals, guys getting in on the blindside and it has happened time after time.
“That’s why a lot of Rangers fans would maybe go to Dujon Sterling, who is more a solid option at full-back.”
Sterling deserves Rangers chance
With Tavernier’s struggles, the 25-year-old deserves a chance to prove he can be a long-term starting option for the Light Blues.
The veteran has been ripped apart by Daizen Maeda in the past few Old Firm matches so Philippe Clement needs to do something different.
If he does not, it may cost him his job, with reports claiming that the wrong result in the Premier Sports Cup final against Celtic could be the final straw in his reign in the dugout [5 December, Daily Record].
Former Chelsea academy starlet Sterling has featured in 11 league matches so far this campaign but has made just three starts.
He could become a long-term starter if he can impress the Belgian when given a starting opportunity.
In other Rangers news, Clement has ruled three players out of the Tottenham clash on Thursday.
