Rangers will now have even more of an incentive to go out and beat Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of their Champions League third-round qualifier.
It goes without saying that progressing as far as possible in Europe’s premier competition is always a priority due to the financial riches it brings but it feels particularly important in the midst of a squad rebuild.
The club have already undergone many changes across the window with a plethora of players both arriving and exiting the club.
Although not all of Philippe Clement’s new arrivals took part in the game, the ones that did made all the difference.
Jefte managed to bag himself an 8/10 rating from Ibrox News despite only playing the second half.
And, after what Gavin Berry said on the Daily Record’s Hotline (6 August), the Gers should throw everything they can at the second leg, especially if they want to sign Hearts striker ace Lawrence Shankland.
“We’re talking about £40million, the figure for getting to the [Champions League] group stage or maybe more,” Berry said
“That’s the dream scenario, let’s not forget this tie alone is worth around £4.5million to just get into the playoff now, that’s significant money.”
While Dan Plumley has already shared the bumper fee for getting into the Champions League proper, the fact that the club could get just £4.5m from just moving into the next round makes it obvious why European football should be the club’s top priority.
Rangers winning against Dynamo Kyiv could allow them to bring in more players
Although £4.5m might not seem like an awful lot of money compared to the riches of clubs elsewhere in Europe, the fee could prove useful in bringing players to Ibrox not least Shankland.
Cyriel Dessers may have been the man to earn the Gers a crucial draw in the first leg but he was pretty profligate again and the need for potency in front of goal, like what Shankland would bring, remains evident.
The addition of the Scotsman would improve their attacking options significantly and ease some of the burden on Dessers’ shoulders to be more prolific.
New defender Robin Propper should be available for the next tie but his addition won’t solely help the club triumph.
As long as they start a similar team to what they finished the first leg with, it feels as if the club could easily triumph over Dynamo at Hampden Park.
If they do manage to overcome Dynamo in their second leg, the addition of Shankland would no doubt help the club in their bid to gain entry to the Champions League proper.
In other Rangers news, Ferguson shared his verdict on Rangers new boy Jefte after his debut for the club.
