Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Everton almost feel synonymous with one another now.

The striker has been leading the Toffees’ line for almost eight years and has shown his class in spurts, but recently things haven’t quite gone to plan.

Calvert-Lewin has managed to bag himself a couple of goals this season but, compared to where Everton need him to be, he’s miles off the pace.

While the Toffees’ fortunes were starting to turn around before the international break, Calvert-Lewin’s continued to be below par.

As his contract is expiring at the end of the season, it’s left many wondering whether he’ll extend his Goodison Park stay.

TEAMtalk reported on 13 October that the Toffees were in ongoing talks for his extension and hoped to have a deal finalised before January.

While on paper this might be seen as Everton’s commitment to the 27-year-old leading their line for the foreseeable future, Kevin Thelwell could have an ulterior motive and be looking to extend his contract so the club can get a fee for his transfer in the summer window.

Everton should sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Although this may seem like a long-winded way of doing things, it would be a smart move from Everton.

The striker is arguably one of the club’s most valuable assets and, if he was allowed to leave for free, it would be nothing short of a disaster.

As aforementioned, his form hasn’t been the best over the last few seasons and while injuries have played a part in that, the Merseyside outfit need to expand their horizons to try and break their striker curse.

Armando Broja is likely to return soon and, if he performs well for Everton upon his integration into the squad, Sean Dyche may push for the club to exercise the Toffees’ option to buy the Albania international [Klaudio Ndreca, 1 October].

Calvert-Lewin’s sale would raise the club millions and would also take the pressure of making Broja’s deal permanent off the club’s shoulders, resulting in a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Of course, this is all just ifs, buts and maybes at the moment but with the recent form of Calvert-Lewin being brought into focus, it’s a course of action that makes plenty of sense.
