Will Lankshear is now at risk of losing his place in the Tottenham first-team squad.
Lankshear couldn’t stop scoring for the Under-21s during the 2023/24 campaign as Spurs lifted the Premier League 2 title.
As a result, the 19-year-old has deservedly been handed more opportunities with Ange Postecoglou’s first team this season.
He made his competitive debut and first start for the club as Spurs beat Ferencváros 2-1 at the Groupama Arena in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday 3 October.
On either side of that European outing, the striker was on the bench for Spurs’ 3-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford (29 September), and the club’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton at the Amex Stadium (6 October), also in the Premier League.
While he didn’t come on in either game, his inclusion in Premier League matchday squads demonstrates just how highly Lankshear is rated. However, his run of three consecutive matches in a first-team squad looks likely to come to an end against West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (19 October).
Ange Postecoglou provides injury update on Richarlison at Tottenham
Postecoglou has provided an injury update on both Son Heung-min and Richarlison ahead of the clash with the Hammers. The Spurs boss said, “Yes, they are both good to go” (via Fabrizio Romano, 18 October).
Son is expected to start against West Ham, while Richarlison might have to settle for a place on the bench.
That spells bad news for Lankshear, who will most likely be the player to make way for the Brazillian striker.
Mikey Moore could also make way from the first-team squad now that Son is back. However, the 17-year-old will be hopeful that it isn’t too long until he is pushing the South Korean for a start.
While this will come as a blow to Lankshear and potentially Moore as well, it is to be expected considering the seniority and value in the first team of both Son and Richarlison. Therefore, the Spurs youngsters mustn’t be discouraged and should continue to work hard for more first-team opportunities.
In other Tottenham news, Manchester City are in advanced talks to beat the club to a new signing.
