Wenham backs Tottenham to agree fresh five-year contract with big-name star ASAP

John Wenham believes Tottenham need to prioritise a brand-new contract for Cristian Romero.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose is hopeful that the North London club can tie the 26-year-old down to a brand-new five-year deal.

Romero’s current contract expires in 2027 with the Argentina international a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad last season.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested that the club will want to feel more secure over Romero’s future.

“From Spurs’ point of view, they need to get Romero’s contract renewed this year,” Wenham said.

“He only has three years left to run on his current deal. Therefore agreeing on fresh terms needs to be an absolute priority for the club.

“Hopefully they can agree on a brand-new five-year deal which expires in 2029, as that would allow them to feel safe and relaxed in their position.

“As I said, this needs to be a priority for the club, pretty much immediately.”

Cristian Romero to sign a new contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

Spurs would no doubt like to keep Romero in North London for the long term. Therefore, it is very unlikely that the club won’t look to tie the Argentine down to a new deal.

Instead, it will be a question of whether or not Romero himself wants to extend his stay with Spurs. The centre-back is one of the best in Europe in his position.

He has won numerous titles with the Argentina national team. As a result, he will want to compete for titles at club level too.

Tottenham, Cristian Romero
Tottenham should do all they can to keep hold of Cristian Romero.

Therefore, unless Spurs show ambition and push on under Postecoglou, it could be difficult to convince Romero to stick around.

In other Tottenham news, one player at the club could soon receive his first senior England call-up.
