Wenham suggests club has fed information to BBC Sport to strike Tottenham bargain

John Wenham doesn’t understand why Geona are trying to agree on a cut-price deal with Tottenham for Djed Spence.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes that the Serie A side could still end up signing the right-back.

As reported by BBC Sport (3 July), Genoa were unable to reach a cut-price agreement to sign Spence from Tottenham.

The Italian side were keen to make Spence’s stay permanent after he spent last season on loan with the club, but could not agree on a fee below the £8.5million buy option.

However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – does not feel that the transfer saga is over.

“I wouldn’t read too much into these stories,” Wenham said.

“To me, this all just seems like a negotiation tactic and Genoa feeding information to people to try and drive the price down.

“I have no idea why they’re trying to drive the price down, it is already a good deal. It seems like they’re trying to sign him on the cheap.

“However, I wouldn’t rule out that transfer yet. Until they sign someone else, I imagine a move for Spence will be kept open.”

Will Genoa sign Djed Spence from Tottenham?

This will be incredibly frustrating for Tottenham.

When Spence was sent out on loan to Genoa last season a buy-option was included in the loan agreement between the two clubs.

Therefore, Spurs will feel as though if Genoa want to sign the player, they should respect the buy option.

It appears as if they are not, and that will therefore be frustrating for Daniel Levy.

However, Spurs need to get Spence off their books, with the defender clearly having no future under Ange Postecoglou.

As a result, Levy might be forced to give in to Genoa’s demands as the transfer window progresses.
