What Mikel Merino has now been spotted doing in Spain as Arsenal move draws closer

Arsenal are edging ever closer to the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino as they continue to work on strengthening the squad.

This summer has been a quiet one in terms of incomings and only Riccardo Calafiori has arrived so far.

However, Arsenal are stepping up their efforts and the signing of Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino appears to be getting ever closer.

Reports yesterday suggested Merino had all but completed his move to the Gunners and a medical was being booked.

Further, despite suggestions Merino could be available to face Aston Villa this weekend, it appears that deadline has been missed.

Still, it looks positive for Arsenal on Merino and according to Mundo Deportivo, the player himself has now taken a big step to making the switch.

Mikel Merino says goodbye to Real Sociedad as he prepares for Arsenal move

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, Merino has been at the Real Sociedad training complex this morning saying his goodbyes.

It comes as Merino is set to jet into the UK to complete his move to Arsenal, albeit he could be in for a rocky flight due to the storms in the UK right now.

The Spaniard has emerged as the main target for Arsenal after it became clear Martin Zubimendi wouldn’t be available.

Arsenal may not be done after adding Merino either, with a new winger or forward believed to feature high on their wishlist.

Merino to improve Arsenal again

For Mikel Arteta, this summer has seemed all about ensuring his squad is improved and adding a player like Merino does that.

Selling the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Eddie Nketiah has boosted the coffers a bit as well and with Aaron Ramsdale also on his way out, it’s a summer of change at the club.

In terms of Merino, he brings a quality and calmness to an important position on the pitch.

Arsenal never replaced Granit Xhaka and the Kai Havertz experiment in midfield never worked either.

Merino, then, is the ideal addition.
