'Why?' - Sky Sports pundit perplexed by baffling thing Everton star did vs Ipswich

Dwight McNeil wasting “great” work by Iliman Ndiaye to squander a “golden” early opportunity for Everton at Ipswich left Darren Ambrose baffled.

The Sky Sports pundit reacted live on the world feed commentary of the 2-0 result at Portman Road on 19 October after the Toffees winger was found in a dangerous position inside the hosts’ box in the 10th minute.

Instead of firing Ndiaye’s cut-back from the left at goal first-time he stopped, took a touch, and waited to allow Jack Clarke to nick in and take the ball off his toe.

Ambrose said (3.25pm): “Why has he taken a touch? He didn’t need to take that touch. We’ve seen at the other end Jack Clarke missed a golden opportunity, it’s the same.

“Ndiaye with a great cut-back, he didn’t need to take that touch. He gave Jack Clarke the opportunity. Maybe the pass was a little bit too hard? You have to hit that, you don’t get time in the box like that.”

Iliman Ndiaye outstanding in Everton win at Portman Road

It was an odd choice from McNeil in a display that was some way below his best despite not being atrocious, as virtually the whole side put in a shift to record just a second win of the season.

The former Burnley man’s left foot is well known to be lethal so it was a confusing anticlimax for him to decide not to use it when given a great chance by Ndiaye.

Thankfully it wasn’t long later that the Senegal international took it upon himself to open the scoring, seizing on poor defending at the back to lash into the far corner in the 17th minute.

The summer signing was superb in attack and defence in victory and is quickly establishing himself as a star in Sean Dyche’s side.

McNeil did put in good work before the break to play the ball into Michael Keane wide in the area, but it still looked unlikely that the oft-criticised defender would manage to blast a rocket of a shot into the roof of the net from that angle.

That is exactly what he did though and the Toffees played out a relatively comfortable win with a clean sheet from there.

On the road and missing a host of injured players, including star man Jarrad Branthwaite once more, it was a hugely-encouraging performance from Everton, even if Kieran McKenna’s side didn’t put up a huge fight.

In other Everton news, the Dan Friedkin takeover is predicted to be just weeks away from completion in the latest update.
