Bryan King has urged Tottenham midfielder James Maddison “to step up” in North London.
The ex-Spurs scout is concerned by the 27-year-old’s failure to complete 90 minutes in the Premier League this season.
Maddison has been substituted early in all nine of Spurs’ league matches this term. In the 4-1 win over West Ham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (19 October), he was hooked at half-time.
Most recently, he was brought off in the 62nd minute of the club’s 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has questioned what the thinking behind this might be.
“Maddison needs to step up,” King said.
“If he wants to get back in the England squad, he needs to start producing England-level performances. At the moment, his consistency is poor.
“He hardly completes 90 minutes anymore, which is also worrying. What are his fitness levels? What are his contributions to the team on the pitch?”
James Maddison struggling to complete 90 minutes for Tottenham
On form, Maddison is one of Spurs’ best players, certainly creatively. Therefore, it does seem odd that Ange Postecoglou is reluctant to let the Englishman see out 90 minutes.
Against Palace, with Spurs chasing the game, it was pretty telling that the Australian hooked Maddison with more than half an hour left to play, a decision which King believes left the midfielder unhappy.
However, perhaps Postecoglou feels as though Maddison isn’t fit enough to play a full match.
If that is the case, this is a problem, and it is something which the Spurs playmaker must address.
