'Wouldn't be surprised' - Journo backs PL club to submit 'Cheeky' transfer offer for Everton ace

Joe Thomas has admitted he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Manchester United submitted a “cheeky” transfer offer for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Toffees forward has been linked with the Goodison Park exit as he enters the final year of his contract, with reports suggesting the Red Devils have held internal talks over his availability [The Athletic, 9 July].

Erik ten Hag’s side have lost Rasmus Hojlund to injury while Joshua Zirkzee isn’t expected to be thrown into the fold and Liverpool Echo journalist Thomas believes Calvert-Lewin may offer a solution.

Speaking on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (5 August, 47:35) he said: “I wouldn’t be surprised if Manchester United had a little look at him.

“I would be interested to see where the relationship between the two clubs is after the Branthwaite problems.

“Manchester United, Hojlund’s just picked up an injury, they’re reluctant to place too much responsibility on Zirkzee hitting the ground immediately.

“One of the big problems they’ve had recently on their tour of America is not having a natural striker who can just stay up front and do the obvious focal point stuff that Dominic Calvert-Lewin does.

“So I wouldn’t be that surprised, bearing in mind they’ve spent so much money on Hojlund and Zirkzee in recent seasons if after we’ve seen them put a cheeky bid in for Branthwaite, maybe they might put a cheeky bid in for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

“Maybe £15million or something and maybe he could just answer their problems for a little bit. I’m sure they would give him a decent wage and he’d be happy with that.”

Will Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit Everton amid Manchester United transfer rumours?

The Toffees have found themselves in a position where they may have to accept a cut-price fee for Calvert-Lewin this summer, simply because they are set to lose him for nothing in a year’s time.

Selling the England international for any sort of transfer fee would help balance the books from both a financial and PSR perspective while also freeing up some space on the wage bill for Sean Dyche.

Whether or not United will be willing to pay a multimillion pound fee to solve a problem that may well vanish after the opening few months of the season is up for debate, but the cut-price valuation could appeal.

This is one that could be worth keeping an eye on between now and the end of the transfer window. As the season draws closer and teams begin to panic, more and more deals could be completed out of nowhere.

Nothing may yet be imminent, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see the Red Devils submit a “cheeky” offer at the eleventh hour on transfer deadline day.
