After leaving Tottenham in June 2023, star midfielder is now shining for the league leaders

Tottenham have created an exciting, young side under Ange Postecoglou.

Gone are the days of Antonio Conte bringing experienced veterans such as Ivan Perisic to N17 – with gems like Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, Pape Matar Sarr and Wilson Odobert at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham have also created some top talents of their own as Will Lankshear and Mikey Moore push for opportunities under Ange Postecoglou – although a prospect Spurs lost for free in 2023 is now shining in the Championship at Sunderland…

Romaine Mundle starts to fulfil immense potential after Tottenham exit

Some Tottenham fans may recall the name Romaine Mundle.

The 21-year-old rejected the offer of a new contract at Spurs back in June 2023 in search of opportunities elsewhere, after failing to make a senior appearance for Tottenham despite showing plenty of promise.

In fact, Conte even called Mundle into training at Hotspur Way on regular occasions, with Cristian Stellini adding that the midfielder was ready to play for Spurs.

The man from Edmonton’s desire to play football led him to Standard Liege, where ten appearances and two goals followed before a return to England with Sunderland materialised in January 2024 – the Black Cats paid £2m for the midfielder.

Now, Mundle is shining.

The Sunderland No.14 was recently named in the English Football League Team of the Week, where he was described as a “star player” after scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win against Burnley on Saturday 24th August.

Mundle then netted his second goal of the 2024/25 campaign in Sunderland’s 3-1 win over Portsmouth on Saturday, which kept the Black Cats top of the Championship after winning four out of four so far.

Spurs will kick themselves

Had Postecoglou – a man more willing to field young talent – been at Tottenham instead of Conte during the 2022/23 campaign, we are sure Mundle would have been given a debut, which would have potentially convinced him to stay in N17.

Now, Spurs can only watch as the winger looks set to emulate the likes of Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise in tearing up the Championship, which could lead the wonderkid to make a big-money return to the Premier League soon.

For example, Tottenham only just plucked Odobert from the Championship in a £25m move from Burnley, so if Mundle can enjoy a strong 2024/25 campaign with Sunderland, there is no reason why he cannot also be worth that amount soon.
