Ally McCoist says £120k-a-week Arsenal player 'will not be happy' right now

Optimism is high at Arsenal in wake of a decent summer on the transfer front and a solid win in their first Premier League game of the season.

The Gunners have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of Riccardo Calafiori and look set to make a key midfield addition in the coming days.

Reports have suggested that Mikel Merino is closing in on a move to Arsenal and there may even be a breakthrough by Thursday.

Several players have also left the Emirates Stadium this summer and there could yet be more outgoings before deadline day on 30 August.

Ally McCoist has now spoken about an Arsenal player who is being linked with a move to another Premier League side.

The pundit, speaking on talkSPORT, said the player “will not be happy right now” and “needs to play” in the top flight.

Ally McCoist says Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale ‘needs to play’ in the top flight

The player in question is Aaron Ramsdale, whose future at Arsenal is uncertain after becoming second-choice in goal last season.

Over the past few days, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a loan move for the Gunners goalkeeper.

McCoist told talkSPORT (20/8/2024, 7:24am) that Arsenal will be “absolutely delighted” with having Ramsdale and David Raya in their squad.

However, the pundit also said Ramsdale “will not be happy” with his current role on the bench and said he needs to be playing regularly in the top-flight.

“Aaron Ramsdale, without doubt, deserves to be playing in the top flight and he is good enough to play in the top flight and should be playing in the top flight,” he said.

“He will not be happy not playing in the top flight.

“From Arsenal’s point of view, the fact that the whole conversation which has been discussed by ourselves, sportspeople all over the place, when the change was made, it has gone to bed now.

“I think he needs to play, he definitely needs to play. From Arsenal’s point of view, you are absolutely delighted with the two goalkeepers you have got.”

Ramsdale needs to move

Ramsdale quickly became first-choice at the Emirates Stadium after joining for £30million in 2021, but he lost his place to Raya last season.

The £120,000-a-week ace (Daily Mail) is too good a keeper to be warming a bench, and is very much being wasted at present. For the sake of his own career, he needs to move.

Wolves are a good club for Ramsdale to join. Perhaps he can go on to have the same impact as the last goalkeeper who left Arsenal for a Premier League team in the West Midlands.
