Alasdair Lamont believes Philippe Clement “cannot afford” for anyone at Rangers to “take their eye off the ball” if he wants to re-mount a title challenge at Ibrox.
The Gers currently sit third in the Scottish Premiership and are 11 points adrift of league leaders Celtic.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (4 December), BBC reporter Lamont shared his thoughts on the Belgian’s current situation.
“If Rangers can record victories in both those games [Kilmarnock and Celtic] (maybe even with a bit of panache, which has been lacking domestically), they can turn their attention to two potentially pivotal matches against Tottenham in the Europa League and Celtic in the League Cup final,” he wrote.
“More on those nearer the time, but they are looming large on the horizon, despite Clement’s mantra about only ever focusing on the next game.
“Few managers stray from that approach, at least in public, and the Rangers boss cannot afford for anyone at the club to take their eye off the ball before those games if he wants preparations for them to be positive”.
Rangers have a lot of making up to do to their fans
Unless you’re a Rangers fan and you’ve followed Clement’s men this season, you’ll not be able to understand how much of a rollercoaster they’ve been put through.
While their performances in the Europa League and the Scottish League Cup have been impressive, their domestic form has once again left a lot to be desired.
The fact that the club aren’t even second in the league is something that fans didn’t even likely fathom to be a possibility at the start of the season but now, it’s the reality they find themselves in.
So, it’s no wonder that at times this term, it’s been mooted that things were on the edge of turning “toxic” between the fanbase and Clement.
If the Belgian wants to stay in his role at Ibrox, he’s going to have to figure out a way to carry over the Gers’ Europa League form into the domestic games they play, otherwise, things will continue getting worse until it gets to a point of no return.
