Bill Leckie expects Rangers to be hit with a hefty fine from UEFA after supporters let off fireworks inside Ibrox during the 4-1 loss to Lyon.
The French side humiliated the Gers in the Europa League clash on Thursday [3 October]. Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette scored braces to cancel Tom Lawrence’s equaliser in the first half.
Rangers supporters in the Copland Road Stand caused the match to be paused as flares and fireworks were set alight during the first half and Leckie, reporting for the Scottish Sun [3 October] is expecting UEFA to hit back at the club.
He said: “Worse news for Rangers was behaviour off the park behind me here in the Copland Stand, the last of the fans are leaving.
“And early into the first half, some of those fans let off not just flares, but would you believe it fireworks into the stadium. Fireworks bursting above their own goalkeeper Jack Butland’s heads.
“UEFA will come down on them like a ton of bricks you would imagine, certainly a fine, possibly more, a bad night all round for Rangers.”
Rangers night goes from bad to worse in the Europa League
As if Thursday night couldn’t get any worse for Rangers, the potential impending punishment from UEFA due to a small section of fans is the cherry on top of the cake of what proved to be a humiliating night for Phillipe Clement.
The first half proved to be an end-to-end affair, with Lawrence equalising for the hosts four minutes after Fofana gave Lyon the lead.
However, a blind pass across the midfield from Connor Barron, allowed the visitors to regain their one-goal advantage five minutes after the equaliser killed all the momentum for the Light Blues, and the match became a one-horse contest from that point onwards.
To make matters worse, should UEFA deem it fit, Rangers could now face repercussions for the fireworks incident.
Actions have consequences and it was a mindless act on a night to forget for Clement, the players and supporters.
With ties against Tottenham and Manchester United still to be played, Clement is facing an uphill battle for qualification to the knockout stages of the competition.
