Celtic will bring in a new left-back and a new centre-back before the window shuts.

That’s according to ex-Celtic striker Frank McAvennie, who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Parkhead is no longer the ‘fortress’ it used to be and the club will need to improve the squad ahead of their European campaign.

The Scottish Champions have been linked with a move for Liverpool left-back Owen Beck, who spent last season on loan at Dundee FC.

Football Insider revealed (August 17) that the club are looking to make a permanent move for Beck as they seek cover for Greg Taylor.

Celtic need reinforcements if they want to compete in Europe

Centre-back Liam Scales has come into some fan criticism in the early stages of the season, especially after his performance in their 2-0 league win over Hibernian.

Celtic are said to be flush with cash at the moment after arch-rivals Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage.

“I think they’ll get a centre-half in and they’ll get a left-back”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I think that’s for definite, I think the fans know it, especially If they’re going to make a dent in Europe, I’m not saying their going to win anything.

“Celtic Park was a fortress. We took points off Barcelona, Real Madrid. We took points off AC Milan, Inter Milan, you name them we’ve taken points off every one of them.

“That’s because Celtic Park was a fortress but it’s not anymore. People are no longer scared to go there so we have to put a ring of steel around the ground.

“We need better defender, no disrespect to (Liam) Scales and Greg Taylor, they’re great back-ups but they’re not for Europe.

“When you come up against quality players, I mean I saw Scales go up against Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid last year and it was no contest and he’s about the same age as me.

“I feel sorry for Scales but he’s got a bit of learning to do and he’s got a bit of catching up to do.

“We need someone in there who can sit next to Cameron Carter-Vickers and do the job.”
