Rangers should “certainly” sign Lennon Miller from Motherwell on a permanent deal this summer but then loan him straight back, says Derek Ferguson.
The Light Blues are on the trail of the teenage midfielder after watching him for Stuart Kettlewell’s side during preseason [Football Scotland, 10 July].
Philippe Clement has already signed former Aberdeen ace Connor Barron, 21, for the midfield and has been chasing a senior recruit to go alongside him with offers made and talks held.
But amid doubts as to whether 17-year-old Miller would get starts under the Belgian ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson says the answer is to secure his signature then leave him to develop under Kettlewell.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News he said: “He’s a terrific football player. Do you know something? I’ve heard a few supporters lately talking about him and whether he would get a starting place in the Rangers side.
“I would get him signed. Make sure Motherwell are reimbursed money-wise and I’d still leave him at Motherwell to play, keep him getting first team games under his belt with a clause that you could maybe bring him back in January if need be.
“Certainly sign him, get their money for him, but leave him at Motherwell for the foreseeable future.
“Certainly for another season and let him get as many first-team games under his belt, but yeah he’s a terrific young football player with a big future ahead of him.”
Rangers have already signed former Aberdeen ace Connor Barron
Miller has been linked to Celtic as well as Rangers and there is bound to be no shortage of interest more widely after his impressive start in senior football.
So if the Light Blues are starting to make moves this summer then the best way to secure a deal with Motherwell and not risk stunting his development could be the route suggested.
If the Fir Park hierarchy are interested it would seem to be a way to keep all parties satisfied while ensuring the Gers don’t miss out on another rising Scottish talent in the way they did Lewis Ferguson.
In other Rangers news, James Tavernier’s exit could now be set for a hijack attempt.
