Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk had a mobile phone launched at him from a fan in the stands during the club’s tour of the United States of America.

The Blues have been travelling across the USA for a series of pre-season matches, drawing 2-2 with League One club Wrexham AFC in their first clash in California.

Chelsea then faced Scottish side Celtic – losing 4-1 in Notre Dame – before beating Mexican team Club America in in Atlanta and then suffering defeats to Manchester City and Real Madrid in Columbus and North Carolina respectively.

A video has emerged from Chelsea’s USA tour which shows one supporter lobbing a phone at a player, Mudryk, with the clip going viral on social media.

It is unclear if the fan intended to harm Mudryk or simply wanted him to take a selfie with it, due to a new harmful trend that has been emerging Stateside.

That trend has mostly been seen at American concerts, with some people throwing their phones on stage in the hope that the performer will take a selfie.

Those people are not worried about getting the phone back, since their photos are auto-synced to their iCloud, and they don’t need the device to get the picture.

The problem comes when harm is caused to the performers or athletes. On this occasion, Mudryk managed to see the phone being thrown, and was able to catch it and stop it from hitting him.

Meanwhile, Mudryk has warned Chelsea fans over their ‘expectations’ for him in the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.

The Blues signed Mudryk in a £88.5m deal from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 but the 23-year-old has largely struggled since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea fans are keen to see the Ukraine international reach his full potential – especially given he is under contact until 2031 – and hope he’ll improve this term.

One Blues supporter, @anishpokharel29, reached out to Mudryk in May and posted on Instagram: ‘Misha, what can we expect from you for next season?’

Ahead of Chelsea’s first game of the new season on August 18, Mudryk replied: ‘Expectations are [what] kills our happiness.’
