Chris Jack: Rangers end summer pursuit of Ibrox-linked midfielder

Rangers have decided to end their pursuit of Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordan and he will not move to Ibrox this summer, according to Chris Jack.

The Rangers Review journalist reported on Sunday (28 July) that the Light Blues will not continue to push to sign the Spaniard, despite suggestions a deal was close to being agreed between the two clubs.

Jordan’s future remains unclear given the amount of speculation linking him with a summer move to Glasgow, but he will not be the latest new recruit added to Philippe Clement’s ranks.

Reports from within Spain had suggested the Gers had seen a bid accepted to sign the 30-year-old which would see him move on loan, with Clement’s side having the option to make his stay permanent for £3.38million [Fernando Serrano, 27 July].

Will Rangers sign Joan Jordan amid Sevilla exit speculation?

It had seemed as though the Light Blues were getting closer to finally getting their man this summer after weeks of speculation, but this has always seemed like it would be a very difficult deal for Clement’s side to pull off.

Yes, Sevilla did want the midfielder off of their books which gave the Gers some hope. However, there always seemed to be a gap in the two club’s valuations and the Light Blues’ situation would have made that hard to bridge.

Rangers need to clear some space on their wage bill before they can make many more additions ahead of the new season and while Connor Goldson’s departure is imminent, neither Todd Cantwell nor James Tavernier are close to moves.

Hopefully, Clement and his recruitment team at Rangers will quickly move on to alternative targets so that their squad is ready to hit the ground running for the first game of the Premiership season.

In other Rangers news, one pundit admits Tavernier could be the “next” player to depart Ibrox after new transfer developments
