Chris Sutton takes another swipe at Cantwell after what he did in Rangers win v Dundee

Chris Sutton has taken yet another swipe at Rangers star Todd Cantwell after what he did in the 5-2 win over Dundee at Ibrox this week.

The Gers came from 2-0 down to win 5-2 in their final home game of the season, with Cantwell scoring a cross-cum-shot to make it 3-2 before celebrating wildly despite the atmosphere at the ground being rather sombre after Celtic had all-but sealed the title.

And Sutton, writing in his Daily Record column (18 May), took a swipe at the playmaker to continue their long-running feud and claimed that was Cantwell’s mentality was part of the reason why Celtic ended up being champions.

“Rodgers will know it’s hard to find leaders like Hart,” he said. “In fairness, Celtic have a few of them – and that’s why they are champions.

“I look at the likes of McGregor and Forrest – along with Hart – and they are the ones who stayed calm and produced when the pressure was really on.

“Then I look at Rangers and you can see why they collapsed when the heat came on and ultimately fell short. You see Todd Cantwell’s goal celebration the other night in front of all those empty seats at Ibrox.

“He should have been keeping the head down after his side’s failure, not drawing yet more attention to himself. I think back to the social media stuff with the 56 on his shorts – with reference to the title. The likes of McGregor and Forrest have done their talking on the pitch – not on their shorts.”

There’s nothing wrong with some back and forth between rivals, and when someone gets the upper hand they’re supposed to fuel it a little bit.

But over the last 18 months Cantwell has barely mentioned Sutton other than responding to Sutton’s digs, but the Sky Sports pundit has consistently attacked him at any and every opportunity.

At this point it’s basically bullying, because it’s so one-sided. Rangers need to give Cantwell some ammunition in order to get back at him, as he’s drowning currently.

The problem is that while Celtic keeping winning league titles and Cantwell keeps underperforming and pulling stunts he’s giving Sutton all the ammo and doing nothing for himself to avoid criticism.

Everyone needs to step it up at Ibrox, but Rangers in particular need to stop talking so much and just start getting it done on the pitch. Once they do that, all the outside noise will stop too.
