Cole Palmer proved that he’d had the last laugh with Morgan Rogers after being named the Player of the Match as Chelsea beat Aston Villa.
The Blues star posted on his Instagram stories after the 3-0 victory on 1 December to show a private chat with his former Man City teammate along with the award from earlier in the day.
The 22-year-old curled in a sensational left-foot finish from the edge of the box in the 83rd minute to seal victory. The England international now has eight goals for the Blues this season, having also assisted Enzo Fernandez’s first-half strike.
The England ace took to social media to poke fun at Rogers, revealing a Snapchat conversation earlier in the week screen-shotted next to his award.
The Villa man had said, “No goals against villa”, to which Palmer had replied, “Player of the match is comin back with me”, and it did.
Enzo Maresca has Chelsea firing
Football Insider opinion
Enzo Maresca’s side have risen up to joint-second in the Premier League table on 25 points while Villa drop to 12th on 19 points. Unai Emery is currently enduring the longest winless run of his tenure at Villa Park, having not won in eight matches, since the 2-0 Champions League win over Bologna in October.
The Blues ace has continued his impressive form this season, already amassing 8 goals and 6 assists in the Premier League. This follows on from his remarkable campaign last term, where he contributed to 34 goals across all competitions. In addition to winning the 2023-24 England Men’s Player of the Year the midfielder was also voted the 2023/24 Young Player of the Season in the Premier league.
He is only the third player in history to reach 30-plus goal involvements in a PL season while aged 21 or younger, after Robbie Fowler and Chris Sutton.
Meanwhile, Villa’s Rogers has also been a standout performer, contributing six goal involvements so far this term. In addition to his stellar club form, the 22-year-old received his first England call-up which was a testament to his talents this season.
Both players have proven to be integral to their respective teams, with Palmer’s creative flair and goal-scoring ability complementing Rogers’ work rate and defensive prowess.
But clearly the Stamford Bridge star got the better of the clash between the two in a game where Emi Martinez epitomised the off-colour visitors.
In other news, Arsenal fans have delivered a clear verdict on Chelsea loanee Raheem Sterling.
