Clubs who applied for compensation during the Everton profit and sustainability case have potential claims for settlements, a key legal figure has said.
In a report by The Times (14 November), David Phillips KC – who chaired the commission which placed a 10-point deduction on the Blues 12 months ago – shared his initial opinion.
Burnley, Leeds, Leicester, Nottingham Forest and Southampton sought compensation in the Toffees’ PSR hearings, yet all but the Clarets withdrew after an appeal saw the deduction reduced to six points.
The same commission led by Phillips is to decide on compensation owed for financial damages connected to the case, as he said: “I am satisfied that the applicant clubs have potential claims for compensation.”
Everton still not out of the woods after PSR debacle?
It’s still early days in the 2024/25 Premier League season, with 10 points won from 11 games so far, and despite turbulence never being far away from Goodison Park, it’s nothing compared to this time last year.
The Toffees being slapped with a 10-point deduction before appeal 363 days ago – the biggest in Premier League history – dropped them from sixteenth to nineteenth in the table, setting the tone for a season like no other.
Seeing their punishment reduced to six points in February, only to be hit with a further two six weeks later, hardly helped turn around their ailing form at the time, but Sean Dyche kept his hand on the tiller.
Burnley, Leeds, Leicester and Southampton all suffering relegation at Everton’s expense will be a sore point for years to come, but the club could soon be better placed to deal with any coming PSR threats.
New ownership and stadium alike are both coming into view and with potential claims still to come from their rival clubs – two of whom are still in the second tier – it remains to be seen what the future holds.
In other Everton news, Jarrad Branthwaite’s debacle on international duty has left Sean Dyche and his staff with egg on their faces.
