Everton will hope that the Premier League avoids assessing shareholder loans retrospectively but that could open the door for certain clubs to make compensation claims, according to The Athletic.
Manchester City scored a victory over the Premier League when a tribunal adjudged that some elements of the Associated Party Transactions (APT) rules were unlawful.
As clubs wait to find out the consequences of the same, it remains to be seen whether shareholder loans will be brought under the broader APT rules as argued by City.
The outlet reported via its website on Monday (14 October) that not assessing shareholder loans retrospectively could leave the league exposed to compensation claims from clubs who have had a sponsorship deal altered since December 2021 when the APT rules came into effect.
Everton could seek compensation themselves
The legal battle between Manchester City and the Premier League has opened a can of worms and the fiasco is proving complicated for fans with the amount of nuances to it.
There is an argument that all shareholder loans from December 2021 are revisited to assess whether they are in line with fair market value at the time.
This would mean trouble for Everton, who have received the most amount of money from such loans as per their 2022-23 records, adding up to a massive £451million in total.
It is worth noting that all this comes amid Dan Friedkin’s attempt to buy the Merseyside-based club from Farhad Moshiri, with things going quiet in the background of those matters at Goodison Park.
The £451million owed to Moshiri is expected to be written off when the takeover goes through, which would be a massive boost which could come through before the New Year.
In other Everton news, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is engaged in talks over a new contract at Goodison Park.
