Dermot Gallagher said referee Don Robertson was right not to send off Emmanuel Adegboyega for his challenge during Dundee United versus Rangers.
Speaking on Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch (16 September, 11:45), Gallagher highlighted the point of contact in the Tangerines defender’s lunge on Gers midfielder Connor Barron as his reasoning.
Adegboyega was immediately shown a yellow card by Robertson with Barron down on the deck, as Light Blues supporters in the away end called for the Irishman to be sent off.
Gallagher said: “I think when you look at it he’s very, very low, and there’s minimal contact – he actually catches him across the top of the foot, so it’s not as if he plants them in the shin or studs into the ankle.
“I think the referee calls this right. If you look, there isn’t the massive contact that you’d imagine (for a red card).”
Could Rangers have won by more against Dundee United?
Adegboyega catching Barron slightly higher than where he did could have had both positive and negative ramifications for the Gers, leaving Dundee United down to 10 men while risking injury for the midfielder.
Coming in the 44th minute, Adegboyega being sent for an early bath would have given Philippe Clement’s side a full second half against 10 men, while already a goal to the good.
We’ll never know if the Light Blues would have at least doubled their early advantage in that second period, with Tom Lawrence striding past several defenders in a chance which mirrored his winning goal.
Clement will be more than glad, however, that his side managed to return to winning ways, as well as the fact that Barron came away from Adegboyega’s challenge unscathed to see out the rest of the match.
The 22-year-old has been an ever-present in the Gers’ side this season – their only new signing to be relied on so heavily – and on current form, that’s set to continue for quite some time.
In other Rangers news, the club appear to be more rudderless than ever following a shock resignation in the Ibrox boardroom.
