'Complicated moving parts' emerge as Everton star closes in on Goodison Park exit - report

Newcastle United want to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton this summer but a deal is “complicated”, according to The Athletic.

Writing on their website (22 June), the news outlet report that there is a desire for the transfer to go through and talks have been ongoing for a while.

A deal is complicated due to both clubs’ financial restraints ahead of PSR, so a deal may be forced to wait until July when the Magpies will be have the capacity to spend again as a new year in the PSR cycle will begin.

It’s been a long time since the Toffees have been able to be in a dominant position in transfer negotiations, but they’re in a good spot here.

The striker is entering the final 12 months of his contract at the club, but Everton want to keep him in the squad and have offered him a new deal [Liverpool Echo, 31 May] and that means they won’t be keen sellers.

Newcastle also have a huge amount of cash to spend after the Saudi takeover, but must wait for the new PSR cycle to begin to avoid any potential breaches for their previous problems.

With the PSR hole at Goodison Park essentially solved after agreeing to sell Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa [Paul Joyce, 20 June], that means they aren’t in a rush and won’t need to drop their asking price any time soon.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out and what comes from it, but a move shouldn’t be ruled out at this stage with Everton able to reinvest any cash in the rest of the squad.
