Ross McCausland won’t feature for Northern Ireland in their games against Belarus and Luxembourg as the Rangers forward is nursing a foot injury.
The 21-year-old joined the Green and White Army for the November international fixtures but has now left the camp.
Speaking in a press conference on 15 November, Michael O’Neill confirmed the Rangers attacker has returned to his club ahead of the final Nations League game against Luxembourg on 18 November.
“We have two that will miss out, Ross McCausland came into camp with a foot injury, and we felt the best thing was to send him back to his club,” the Northern Ireland manager told BBC Sport NI.
Ross McCausland injury concern at Rangers
McCausland featured for the Light Blues in their 1-0 win against Hearts on 11 November in the Scottish Premiership, but it looks like the winger has picked up a knock somewhere in between.
It will relieve the Ibrox faithful that the 21-year-old has been sent back to Glasgow instead of being risked by O’Neill, after also missing out in the October international break.
Some see the Nations League as an unnecessary competition, and it would’ve been disappointing for Rangers fans if the Northern Irish youngster had compounded his injury to help his country.
McCausland has established himself in the first-team squad over the years, and supporters will have been pleased to see an academy graduate breakthrough.
The youngster had a breakout season last term and has also been in Philippe Clement’s plans in recent months.
In the current campaign, the 21-year-old has made 15 appearances in all competitions for the Bears, scoring two goals and providing one assist, although most of his game time has been off the bench.
The Light Blues are set to take on Dundee United on 23 November after the international break, and hopefully McCausland’s concerns aren’t serious.
In other Rangers news, the club are planning on making a move for Lennon Miller in January.
