Michael Stewart couldn’t believe Adama Sidibeh avoided a yellow card for a needless challenge on Rangers’ John Souttar as St Johnstone lost 2-0 at Ibrox on Sunday night.
In the 64th minute, the home crowd was left baffled by David Dickinson’s decision to let Sidibeh walk away unpunished after he flattened Souttar with a reckless slide tackle from behind.
Ex-Hearts midfielder Stewart was shocked by Sidibeh’s rash challenge and believes referee Dickinson let him off massively.
“My initial instinct looking at it from here is that he’d be fortunate to get away without a yellow card,” said Stewart on Premier Sports on Sunday night (9:22pm, 6 October). “It looks as if he went straight through the back of John Souttar.
“You can hear the crowd aren’t impressed either.
“I don’t know what he’s trying to do – that’s a yellow card every day of the week.
“It’s astonishing. He can’t get the ball and even if he does get the ball, he’s always going to go right through the Rangers player. Madness.
“He’s just come back from a red card and you look at an incident like that and you say, ‘what is going through your head?’.
“It’s crazy and David Dickinson has left him off on one there, big time.”
Dickinson misses St Johnstone shocker v Rangers
Sidibeh definitely should have been booked because his challenge was bordering on the verge of being worthy of a red card.
There was no debate later in the second half when Ianis Hagi – after a VAR review – was shown a straight red card for an ugly, studs-up challenge on the Saints’ Benjamin Kimpioka.
Hagi didn’t mean to do what he did. He just got caught out a bit and was just trying to make a tackle.
But with Sidebeh, there was no way he was ever going to win the ball. He knew that he was just going to lunge in on Souttar and try to go through the man to get to the ball.
Luckily, the Gers and Scotland defender was fine but Dickinson has to do better there and protect players from the amateur-level players in the Scottish Premiership who are just out to hurt those who are actually talented.
In other Rangers news, Derek Ferguson was shocked by what Clement said about this Gers star.
