Dan Bardell: Tottenham interest likely peaks as they look at new defender transfer

Dan Bardell believes Tottenham Hotspur will look to sign Riccardo Calafiori to help fill out Ange Postecoglou’s squad for next season.

CaughtOffside have reported (18 June) that Spurs have entered the race to sign the 22-year-old from Bologna this summer.

Tottenham have already held talks with the versatile defender with Newcastle, Chelsea and AC Milan also interested in his signature.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has praised the signing as they look to build a squad prepared for European football next season.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “I would say Spurs’ main priority this summer will be players to step in when needed.

“The current back ups can’t do the same job as the starters. I think they need somebody who is the right profile of player if one of their starting defenders are missing.

“He’s a player who is doing well in the EUROs which has probably peaked their interest and he could be a useful option for Spurs this summer.“

Spurs have a great starting XI which got them so far last season but once injuries set in, it became a much more difficult task to be consistent.

Two of the most important players in Postecoglou’s system were Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro who had a great impact from the flanks.

When they both missed games, having Ben Davies and Emerson Royal come in was a sizable drop off which hampered results.

Calafiori isn’t a like-for-like replacement for Udogie as he is a versatile left and centre-back option who has performed well for Italy at the EUROs.

Multi-functional and versatile players are a useful commodity when it comes to building a squad, especially with European competition on the horizon.

After his performances at the tournament, the fee that Bologna can demand are set to be increased so that may put Tottenham off.

He would certainly be a positive addition but with him not being a guaranteed starter, it may be a risk.
