Wayne Rooney hails 'Brilliant' Everton ace he once wasn't sure about

Wayne Rooney admits he has been surprised by how important Pickford has turned out to be for England and Everton.

Pickford had little to do as England started their Euro 2024 campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia (16 June) but made one fine stop from Dusan Vlahovic in Dusseldorf.

The 30-year-old has become a key figure for club and country, something his former Toffees teammate Rooney did not see happening.

“I played with Jordan at Everton and my concern was, he gets a bit agitated. Joe Hart was the same,” Rooney said on the Overlap (18 June).

“I went from playing with Edwin van der Sar, who was the calmest man ever, to Jordan Pickford, who was like a bit, so I was like, I wasn’t really sure, but then obviously, the way his career’s gone, he’s been brilliant, especially for England.”

Why Everton man Jordan Pickford is the right man between the sticks for England

Ever since Southgate took over as the Three Lions’ manager, he has been one of the first names on England’s teamsheet.

The former Sunderland ‘keeper has been among the best performing players for England in recent times and rightly deserves his starting spot.

Although he currently plies his trade for the Toffees, there have been rumours linking the shot-stopper with a move away from Merseyside [TEAMtalk, 9 May].

However, despite interest in previous windows, it seems as if Sean Dyche will be able to keep his man for at least the next season [Fabrizio Romano, 3 June].

This is a major boost for Everton’s quest for Premier League survival once again, and, with the Dan Friedkin takeover now all but finalised [The i, 18 June], the future is starting to look somewhat brighter for the blue half of Merseyside.

Only time will tell whether or not Everton will get back to winning ways and compete in Europe again, however, one thing is for sure, with Pickford in goal, they stand a much better chance with than without him.

In other Everton news, negotiations are still ongoing between Everton and Manchester United for Toffees star.
