Danny Murphy has slammed Everton for their “crazy” defending in the 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

The Blues took a commanding two-goal lead in the second half with two quickfire goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Former Liverpool player Murphy couldn’t believe what he was seeing while covering the match for BBC Radio 5 Live [31 August]

He said: “There’s a lot involved in that [performance]. You lose belief and start doubting what you’re doing and each other but it’s also a lack of leadership. They’ve got experienced players on the pitch.

“It’s simple stuff. They were absolutely all over the place [Everton]. The gaps were huge. It was crazy what they were doing.”

Sean Dyche to blame for shocking Everton collapse

Sean Dyche has a lot to answer for after his side’s display that now marks three consecutive defeats to start the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The loss against Tottenham last weekend can be justified against a superior opponent. However, the Toffees should be winning matches against sides such as Bournemouth at home if they want to avoid a relegation battle this season.

It is not good enough for a club predicted to survive relegation and they will remain at the foot of the league table for another two weeks at least.

With no train station to congregate at this week, the Everton supporters left Goodison Park in the masses and the few that stayed until the final whistle let the players know their thoughts with a chorus of boos.

Dyche will be working on borrowed time at the Blues. Kevin Thelwell has used the finances at his disposal to back the manager this summer and now it is up to him, and him alone, to get results on the pitch.

The 53-year-old has allowed enough time for the new signings to settle into life on Merseyside and must use the international break to find the flaws in his side and correct them before the next match against Aston Villa.

In other Everton news, Stephen Warnock was forced into a U-turn after something he said on BBC.
