Rangers are right to question the Scottish FA about Frank Connor being appointed to a Celtic game, according to Des Roache and Steve Conray.
Writing via their The Ref’s View X account, the former SFA officials slammed the governing body for naming Connor as an assistant referee for Celtic’s game against St. Johnstone on Sunday (29 December) just days after he was guilty of not giving the Gers a penalty in the League Cup final, which the Hoops won in penalties.
The pair said it is “disgraceful” of the SFA to put the referee under immense pressure and backed the Light Blues’ decision to question the same, although they would have preferred if they did it privately instead of releasing a public statement.
“Why on earth have the Scottish FA appointed Frank Connor to a Celtic match so soon after the recent media outrage?”, Roache and Conray wrote via The Ref’s View X account (24 December).
“He can’t win in this situation. Disgraceful pressure to put him under and not protecting him.
“Rangers quite right to question it but would’ve preferred it privately.”
Rangers question Scottish FA over Celtic controversy
One of the first things new CEO Patrick Stewart did after taking office on 16 December was contact Willie Collum, the head of referees, to demand answers for Vaclav Cerny being denied a penalty after a tug from Liam Scales.
Collum later admitted that referee Alan Muir and Connor, who was on VAR duty, got the decision wrong. The pair were not given any Premiership games to officiate last weekend as a result.
However, the Gers are disappointed to see Muir and Connor reinstated so quickly and also raised questions over the latter being appointed to a Celtic game.
The statement has, therefore, quickly become a talking point in Scottish football, with some criticizing the Light Blues for going public.
Meanwhile, others have backed the Ibrox outfit’s decision, insisting that the SFA must explain the decision to reinstate the aforementioned referees.
It remains to be seen what the football association will do in the aftermath of Rangers’ latest statement.
